Happy Heart Day

Last year this is how I spent Valentine's Day.

This year, I skipped working out at the gym and came home. I stopped at the market and picked up a bag of pretzel rods for a whopping $3.49. Who let pretzels get so pricey? I almost stopped and picked up a fillet of haddock but there was a solid line at the fish market. I lingered outside my favorite Monica's Mercato and skipped that as well. While I was tempted by some meats and cheeses, I figured it was unnecessary. I gave up bacon again for Lent.

21 hours in NYC

This is the story of the time I went to NYC for 21 hours. 

I don't feel the need to write about all the trips I take - but there are some that are worthy of a quick little summary.

For as long as I can remember my mom has asked us if we wanted to go see The Radio City Rockettes.  It's never been something that's really on my list of things to do. But, sometimes things line up perfectly and you just have to go with it. And it's even better when it's a surprise.

I wasn't quite sure how my sister and I were going to surprise my mom with a trip to the Rockettes. But all the involved parties were on board and my Dad took charge of reserving time on the boss lady's calendar. With time reserved, we booked tickets and hotels and trains.

I've got a few blog posts in the works. There has been a fair amount of cooking in the works that I'm trying to document ... but I'm behind schedule. Pretend to be shocked. I'm in the process of writing up some crockpot chicken recipes ... BACON JAM ... and maybe some roasted brussel sprouts.

But, since it's Thanksgiving I had the opportunity to knock two things off my list that I love to do:
(1) make a family breakfast
(2) make a recipe that I've had on my list for months

I come from a carb loving family. We love muffins, bagels, toast ... but especially bagels. On Sunday mornings, my Dad comes home with a pile of bagels and multiple times of cream cheese and perhaps a pound of bacon. He is known around the block for what he calls his "Minot McMuffin" sandwiches ... which is a fried egg, bacon and cheese on a bagel.

So let me introduce you to bagel bombs. More specifically .... everything bagel bombs stuffed with bacon cream cheese.

I have this really weird habit about wanting to wear my bathing suit to the airport.

It just feels like it makes the vacation last longer. But, then it leads to me trying to change in the airport ... and that's just borderline terrible. Although I'm great at it after all my time traveling to Philadelphia. Not to brag or anything.

The All Girls Vacation in FLA was pretty great. My aim is to edit pictures on the plane home so they don't linger for weeks and weeks.... but we'll see. After a day in the sun my body wants to curl up, hug my ipad, and fall asleep.

If I was to summarize the trip in 10 phrases / words / experiences they would be:
morning beach walks.
sunset.
drinks by the pool.
card games on the deck.
the jasmine arbor ... that smelled amazing.
watching two turtles consummate their love.
loads of lizards.
family time.
hair braids.
simple fun.

Spoiler alert.... the summary of this trip (if there is one that is. sometimes I get lazy. we know this.) will be picture heavy and text light. But that's what happens when you don't wear shoes for 4 days and alternate between bathing suits.

Yesterday, I managed to complete another bucket list goal. The half-marathon.

It was a really exciting day and I’m super thankful for all of the digital (and in-person) support I received along the way. I get a little anxious before big days and I hate not fulfilling goals, so I pretty much all out banned anyone from watching the run except my sister. She is a gem that one. Despite a nutters head cold, she was with me at the start, mile 6, and the finish. When I asked her what she did in between our meetings, she responded with “took a few shots of Dayquil”. True story. She also fielded all of the family phone calls patiently about my progress while I ran like hamster.

So this is pretty much how it unfolded.

I'm not sure why I was the only one taking pictures during this event. Some people were way too serious. Come on. This is gorgeous right?

Here I come at mile 6. I told Kerrianne she would be able to spot me because of my neon outfit. Spoiler alert? It's like half the people there all bought from the Spring 2012 neon line. I feel like it looks like I'm walking. But I swear I'm running. I swear. 

Having given up bacon for Lent this literally made me laugh. The most welcome sight at Mile 8. Hyannis has some really weird road names... including "Fresh Holes Road". Yep, that's real.

Half way through the little jaunt my knees started to bother me, which was annoying. Especially since they haven't bothered me in what seems like years. So, boo to that. But, yes. That is a finisher medal around my neck! Victory is mine. Albeit a slower victory than I was expecting. Yes, I know I said last week that I had no time expectations - but in real life I was secretly hoping for 2 hrs. 

And yes, I am almost crying in that picture too. Part of it is because of my knees but it really was because so much more than that. I don't think I realized how important this run was to me. It was more than just a bucket list item. It was also about separating myself from the person I was several years ago. That person, wouldn't have gone to California or started a blog or attempted a half marathon.

Not that you were worried. But the tears were short lived. I immediately also started to laugh as you can see here. That'll happen when you realize how totally out of your element you are and how happy you are at the same time. Plus, it helps when you have a friendly face that lets you quite literally collapse into their arms. 



I'm pretty sure I'll owe my sister for her support for ...... quite awhile. But, I think she'll cash in her chips next week when she moves into a 5th floor walk-up. Yep, that's for real folks.

Bonus. Some great moments?
  • People wear some really great outfits when they are running. I'm not one to talk really. I dress like Punky Brewster but I truly question someone who runs in spandex shorts in February.
  • I followed this guy I called "the hot dad" for like 8 miles. He was really great to fake run with until he called a cranberry bog a strawberry bog. I thought he made a mistake but then he said it twice. He was no longer called "the hot dad". I sneakily took his picture at this moment.
  • Pronouncing at the finish that I would "never do this again" and within 5 minutes was saying that I really felt like I could do it in under 2 hours.
  • My dad giving me a high five when I got home. That was pretty awesome because he was a legit marathon runner. 
  • Finding out that my sister had emailed some of my best friends a picture of me during the race. And then them all replying to it. Amazing.
  • Getting Twitter notifications during the run of friends rooting me on over the interwebs. Who said you shouldn't read twitter and run? 


patience for bolognese sauce

Sometimes I feel like cooking and sometimes I feel like taking pictures. Other times, a recipe is so easy that it almost seems as though there isn't time for either to happen.
Bolognese sauce is definitely a case for this.

I ended up making Bolognese sauce last week because I needed a meal that would do the following:
  • train friendly. needed to get home via train for my mom's birthday. 
  • be something new. ahem 52 in 52... 
  • Italian-ish. when you refuse to leave your neighborhood.... this happens.
It also wouldn't hurt it the recipe appealed to the entire family as opposed to just me.

Enter.... Bolognese sauce.

I'm sure there are ways to make this recipe complicated and challenging. There are ways to make pancakes challenging right? But I honestly can't imagine what you'd do to make it hard (twss). But that helps when you decide to use a crockpot. Plus, I used one of those crockpot liners ... so the cleanup was non-existent. I might never crockpot without one again - totes worth the cost (approx $2 a liner) for a weekday cooking event.

The thing about bolognese sauce is that it has a pretty odd collection of ingredients in it. One, pancetta. (Hello gorgeous) Two, celery and carrots (Hello vitamins). I bet you never thought those would go together. But they do... especially when you toss in some meat and wine... and cook it for NINE HOURS.

So this is how it all goes down.

(Step 1) In a large fry pan over medium-high heat, warm the olive oil. For real a large pan, trust me I learned the hard way. Add the pancetta and sauté until it begins to render its fat, about 1 minute. Add the onions, carrots and celery and sauté until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes. 

(Step 2) Add the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until it is no longer red. This doesn't take super long, but also don't worry your pretty little head about perfection. Remember its going to sit in a slowcooker for hours. Anything that isn't totally cooked will be done without fret. Transfer the meaty business to a slow cooker.


(Step 3) Add the broth and wine to the pan and increase the heat to high. Bring to a boil and deglaze the pan, stirring to scrape up the browned bits from the pan bottom. Pour the liquid into the slow cooker along with the tomatoes and stir to combine. I didn't have a whole lot to "deglaze" but I'm sure there was some great flavor there... and I hate to miss out on flavor.

Chef's note.... If you remember from the tomato soup recipe, San Marzano tomatoes are the best thing since sliced bread. So, despite the recipe calling for "crushed plum tomatoes" ... I said no way and crushed these suckers myself.


Shopping List

Olive oil
2 oz. pancetta, chopped
2 small yellow onions, finely chopped
2 carrots, finely chopped
1 celery stalk, finely chopped
2 lb. ground beef
2 cups beef broth
1 1/2 cups dry red wine
1 can (28 oz.) crushed plum tomatoes
1/2 cup skim milk
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

This is the picture I sent my family as evidence of cooking time. If you think thats in minutes, you are a fool. I never thought I'd wait 9 hours for anything but bread to rise.
Fresh pasta meat boiling water. I bought this pasta from a local shop in the North End ... and literally saw the old woman who makes it. Pretty phenomenal. I also got to hold her adorable grandchild who was quite taken with my big canvas tote. Note: I didn't ask permission before I wrapped that adorable little girl in my arms. I figured it was a fair trade for 3 things of pasta and bread. No?

How I Spent Christmas

Our family loves Christmas. Like for real. 

We have a forest of Christmas trees that are set-up each year.... and each come with their very own theme. Its for real yo.

Christmas for us also means.... sweatpants, snuggling in front of the fire, Netflix, and any other word that emits extreme casual. While I respect people that put on blazers and tights for dinner, I fundamentally don't get it. Why wouldn't you want an elastic waistband? Why wouldn't you want to be gently covered in blankets on the couch? Please note, that if for some reason you ever invite me to your family occasion and you get "dressed up"... I will too and happily. Don't worry.

Christmas this year was pretty awesome. Not to make it all about me, but I got some gifts that were crazy thoughtful slash funny slash true to my character. But since, I already have my gifts packed up for my return to the North End that'll be a whole other post because it's worth it. Instead, I'll share some snaps on how we spent the day cause it was a pretty great day.

Mass with the Family
Note: I got reprimanded by the lady next to me for laughing in church. I'm not making this up. It was like out of the movies. The thing was I wasn't even laughing. I was just perplexed by the whole word changes that seem to have gone down since I was last at church. It's like they want it to be crazy obvious who doesn't go regularly
Traditional Family Breakfast
We always have a family Christmas breakfast ... and since my aunt lives just a few steps away.... Little Brother and I just longboarded over. Never thought I'd be longboarding in December...
 Moccasins, Jeggings, and a big down coat.... seems pretty great.
 Sitting in front of the fire.... with some stellar breakfast food and a mimosa. The traditional menu items? Sausage egg casserole (so good it hurts... probably my heart... but its... worth.... it) and blueberry french toast.
Present time.
This book was the first present I opened. In the event you are distracted my grandfather and brother in the background.... its an Ansel Adams book on Yosemite .... as in where I took part of my epic California adventure. I don't get emotional but for some reason, I literally started to tear up opening it. How's that for honesty? It's the truth. The minute I saw the cover and knew that I had stood in that exact spot (Tunnel View Day 3 and Day 4) it was oddly surreal.
 Dinner.... and leftovers
The next best thing to wearing sweatpants during a formal meal.... is the leftovers the next day. We had ham and potatoes and veggies for dinner. For breakfast today I chopped and crisped up those taters and tossed is some of the ham. Guess what? It was delicious. I didn't add a single thing to it. Not salt. Not pepper. Nothing.

The other highlight that doesn't have any pictures? I had an amazeballs run after dinner. Like amazeballs. I put on my comfy pants. Loaded up a playlist and hit the road. I took a totally different route than I normally do and it was awesome.... plus it was the furthest I've run (thanks Runkeeper for keeping track).
Confession? I'm thinking about registering for the Hyannis Half Marathon in a few months. I think it'd be great for a few reasons:
(1) It'll keep me motivated for winner running
(2) It'll cross something off my bucket list
(3) It's a coastal run. Come on.... we know I love the ocean!

So we'll see. I'm going to noodle on that for a few days.

I'm not lame (most of the time)

My little brother doesn't think I've very cool. I mean I'm fine with that. I'm 28 years old. I can take it.

Almost.

I can take not knowing all the cool YouTube videos. SNL sketches. Rappers. Etc.

Things I can't take? I can't take him thinking that I'm weak. Ok, I can. But when he didn't think I could do a pull-up, I knew I could prove him wrong. Thus, that's the reason for why I mugged for the camera while I hauled myself up off the ground.

I'd like to think he was impressed, but I think he was more just surprised :)
Sidenote: Apparently there is some guy named "Deadmaus" who sells $40 t-shirts. Little Brother thought I might be his cash connection for such a purchase. I'm not buying this for several reasons. Of which, Little Brother's insane growth spurts is one. This kid has seriously grown like a whole lot. Like a whole lot. I'll just keep supplying him with Mountain Dew Voltage, Chocolate Glaze donuts, and Papa Ginos pizza.

Old Time Happiness

I hope I haven't raised the bar with that title... and you think I'm talking about rolling tires through a field or something. I'm pretty much just referring to ice cream.

Oh Saturday, I was hanging out with Little Brother at the house. An easy day of reading on the porch / hammock / yard ... anywhere there was sun pretty much. Then it hit me, a very strong craving for ice cream but specifically, ice cream with peanut butter sauce. I can't get enough of it. There is something about peanut butter sauce that just takes away my will to fight anything. All I want to do, is sit down, pull my knees up, and get at that dish with a spoon. I don't leave a speck of saucy goodness behind. Feel free to check.

There is this place near where we live called JJ's Dairy Hut and I remember going here for as long as I've been eating ice cream it feels like. The place is only open seasonally, but that's kinda hard to tell considering the sign says "Open" all the time :).
Regardless, its a classy classic place to grab a cone and feel a little bit like ipods don't exist - even though this place is on Foursquare. The vanilla softserve with peanut butter dip {which might actually be better than sauce in fact} was heavenly. Little brother got vanilla with REAL cookie dough chunks and fudge sauce. ... and we both polished those bad boys off real nice.

As a bonus note... The ladies in this house also love peanut butter sauce on "Purple Cow" Ice Cream from Wilburs {another place that doesn't have a website, but has a Foursquare Venue}. Purple Cow ice cream is essentially like black raspberry {maybe} with white chocolate and black chocolate "chips" {that aren't really traditional chips} but also these little tart pieces as well. It's the bomb dot com. Now, add peanut butter sauce. 

You can't tell from this picture, but I'm eating this out of my parent's Waterford Crystal tumbler glasses. Yep, that's how we roll over here. Ice cream in crystal cause we sure as hell aren't using it for entertaining the queen.

It's an occasion for a gathering

When you've been married for 30 years, it normally is cause to have a few friends over and get your kids to make you a meal. So that's what we did.

When cooking for a dozen-ish people after a long week, it was a goal to make the meal as easy as possible... plus, when you are having friends over you want to spend as much time talks to beloved friends not cutting cheese. So this is what we served:
  • homemade salsa by yours truly ... with chips of course
  • scallops wrapped in bacon... sourced from a local caterer
  • crab dip... sourced from aunt
  • handmade burgers!
  • chicken sausage
  • two salads.... yes two, this was a very festive party.

I ate my burger on sourdough bread from French Memories - which was an excellent idea. Another great idea, bacon cheese. You can't really see in this picture... but it was the bomb dot com. What you can see is  the delectable pesto pasta salad made by our cousin. All in all if was a successful evening. So successful that I didn't take any pictures of the salsa making process, or the eating of it, or the leftovers.

Baby Sister raised the bar above my angel food cake from earlier in the week with a three layer beauty. I'll spare you the pictures of the build process.... but needless to say, there were some moments when the cake didn't look as "polished" as it does in these final pictures.

Well done little one. Well done.

summer food delights

I don't remember the first time I had strawberry shortcake but its one of my all-time favorite desserts. I've often said I'd serve it at my wedding - which by that way is lightyears away. It's like the perfect combination of carb-y goodness, sweet fruit, and refreshing whip cream. We've been a "strawberry shortcake" family for a long time it seems. For a family with a sweet tooth, this certainly fits the bill.

When Baby Sister and I were little, the tasks for strawberry shortcake would be divided up. Baby Sister was always in charge of the strawberries. There is a certain art to getting them juicy and she delivered. Now of course I can't remember whether I was in charge of whip cream or the cake business... but more recently I've been in charge of the cake.... and by cake I mean Bisquick. Let's be honest.... Bisquick is like the duct-tape of the kitchen in my mind.  You can use it for like everything carb based. Chicken Fingers? Check. Pancakes? Check. Rolls? Sure why not. Oh and Tuna Burgers. Yes, that's also true.

You may judge the use of Bisquick but it makes the most delicious nuggets of carb-y delight for this dessert. This time around, I elected to help out with portion control by making them in some Texas muffin tins {why Texas? I have no idea. Let's ask Texas}. My inability to measure prevents me from sharing why my Bisquick cakes are better than yours ... but I can tell you that I sprinkle sugar on the top and its delicious.



Homemade whip cream really steps it up a notch and is for sure worth it too. I'm sure a true baker, would say I've over-whipped the cream - but whatever. Its delicious. {How many times have I said that word so far?}

Sunday Dinner

As a bit of a rarity, I actually cooked twice this past weekend. I l.o.v.e. cooking and spending time in the kitchen but traveling every week makes the weekend more for resting than for measuring and mixing. It also doesn't hurt that its GRILLING SEASON! I'll grill anything. I've seen a few good desserts recently that are based on grilled fruit {peaches / pineapple} and I'm going to try those out soon.

Anyway.... on Saturday I made the Cilantro Lime Chicken for dinner to more rave reviews. The tomato, avocado salsa is just salivatingly delicious... even now first thing in the morning.... I'd eat the whole bowl.

When Sunday came around, I saw we had a few extra tomatoes in the fridge and felt like it was the perfect opportunity to try out these Parmesan tomatoes I'd seen on Pinterest. I combined that with some garlic cous cous {couldn't find my favorite Parmesan version!} and more grilled chicken {i'm sure you are surprised.... we are a chicken family}.

The tomatoes were very very easy to make and pretty tasty. Although a few notes for the next time: (1) less "juicy" tomatoes and (2) the recipe totally underestimates the amount of Parmesan required to match the picture. I did substitute fresh oregano with dried oregano from the cabinet and threw on some capers.... well because I love salt.

When we first made the Cilantro Lime Chicken is was mere coincidence that the chicken got a bit chopped up before grilling. Ever since then it's been on purpose. It such a great way to cook more quickly, eat a less at the table, and have the leftovers more ready for consumption. Baby Sister looooves leftovers for lunch... and I love helping her. I seasoned the chicken with olive oil, a small bit of salt, and my favorite Penzey's Southwest seasoning and then slapped those babies on the grill.



Here is the finished product! I hope you love our classy tablecloth :) Its one of my mom's favorites but perhaps we can replace it with something a little more photogenic if these Sunday dinners continue....

Done. Done. and Done.

It can't be a bad day when the weather is 73 and sunny .... and baby chicks show up at your doorstep.

Another great part about Easter Sunday... porch season was back in full swing. We sat on the back porch and ate some tasty monkey bread that I made for breakfast. I'm not sure exactly how it became known as monkey bread. There is nothing about it that says "monkey" to me.

I love stone walls. I think monkey bread looks like a stone wall.

The rest of the day was spent doing the following but in no specific order:
  • napping on the porch
  • going for a run by the ocean
  • eating "dinner" at 1pm
  • holding baby chicks
  • "facetime"-ing with a lovely friend who lives on the west coast
Oh... and I named one of the chicks "Edward". It just felt right. And no, I'm not a Twilight / vampire / crazy person. I've never touched the stuff (stuff being vampire bizness) and I'm not starting now.
... and of course the traditional family Easter egg hunt in the front yard.

Family + Future

It's been two weeks since I've been home and man it feels good. My own bed! All of my sweatpants! Ice cubes! Okay... okay...

Despite being in NYC this week, I did manage to see family. My dad and little brother were in town for Boy Scout trip and so I went to meet them for a quick hello while there were at dinner on Tuesday. On my way to tourist central (aka Times Square vicinity), I passed St. Patrick's Cathedral. I've often been by it but never inside and the doors were wide open since the weather was so nice. Despite being crunched on time, I zipped in and took a few minutes for myself.
 
The cathedral itself is quite busy with tourists but still serene and relaxing oddly enough. I can never resist lighting a candle or two with a prayer. This time I did two candles: one for family and one for the future.


and of course I checked in there on Foursquare. Not that I'm going to Foursquare mayor of a church (don't go enough to make it happen), but feels like an opportunity for a joke about separation of church and state... maybe not. :)
