21 hours in NYC

1.21.2013

This is the story of the time I went to NYC for 21 hours.

I don't feel the need to write about all the trips I take - but there are some that are worthy of a quick little summary.

For as long as I can remember my mom has asked us if we wanted to go see The Radio City Rockettes.  It's never been something that's really on my list of things to do. But, sometimes things line up perfectly and you just have to go with it. And it's even better when it's a surprise.

I wasn't quite sure how my sister and I were going to surprise my mom with a trip to the Rockettes. But all the involved parties were on board and my Dad took charge of reserving time on the boss lady's calendar. With time reserved, we booked tickets and hotels and trains.

then I did the big apple

6.11.2012

A funny thing happened to me last night.

It took like a bazillion years to get home on the train. Something about a cable being broken, a deer getting hit, and not being able to get a cab. It was nearly midnight when I crawled into my bed. Despite being exhausted from a killer weekend, I was a wee bit sad because since I was finally home and in bed ... the weekend was really over.
I spy a super sweet boat near Mystic, CT.

It was a really great weekend in NYC filled with old friends, new experiences, and great memories all around. I managed to get on a mid-day Friday train to Manhattan which permitted me to be in Central Park sipping an iced latte with a friend when I would normally be sipping a beer at Clery's after work. Pretty great right? Answer. Yespleaseandthankyou.

So, what did I do? I'll tell you.

Friday. Delivered some bacon jam to the Upper East Side, followed by a walk in Central Park. My friend is gorgeously pregnant. Apparently the little blessing growing inside her has also blessed her with an increased love of bacon... which naturally made her a perfect recipient of bacon jam.

I also managed to fit in dinner and drinks with one of my oldest guy friends and his fiance (soon to be bride) in Tribeca. And thanks to my late night dining in Miami, I was totally prepared for a 9 pm reservation at Gigino Trattoria followed by rooftop Moscow Mules at the Conrad Hotel. Please take note, having now been to my first rooftop bar... I now want all bars to be roof-less.
all bars should have their roofs removed and be placed near large bodies of water.

Saturday. One of my favorite things to do when I worked in NYC was to get up early and walk through the greenmarket in Union Square ... so that's what I did ... except I walked a little further. I walked from my hotel, to Madison Square Park, to Union Square, to Washington Square ... and even a little jaunt over the Brooklyn Bridge (sssh, I took a little subway ride to the bridge). I've always wanted to walk over the bridge and it was totally worth it.
washington square.

bagpipers? sure okay with me. I like surprises.

so this is what brooklyn looks like.

le bridge.

After a 5 mile walk a girl deserves a good lunch and boy did I have it. My newly married friend (remember here?) took me on a tour of Greenwich Village area and lunch at Westville West. One of the best things about her is that she gives into what is fun... like ordering a hot dog and splitting it. I've always been a fan of hot dogs (twss), but that was one that I'll always remember. Oh, and for fun we swung by Magnolia Bakery for a sweet treat, walked the High Line, and went to a blow dry bar. (Dear Boston, please get one soon. I'll be a frequent customer.)
I wish you could have tasted how amazing that crispy polenta was...

I was not done having fun there either. I pull on my big girl shoes and went out for the night. Just as I finished telling Baby Sister that I could use a gin and tonic, I had one in my hand with a big ole slice of cucumber in it from Kingswood ... followed by a phenomenal meal at Whitehall that was just across the road. Not a bad way to celebrate a Saturday night in NYC. Who needs sleep right?
how many pairs of shoes can you see? answer = not all the shoes that I brought with me.

Sunday. I love living in the North End but there are no bagels here... there are plenty of bagels in New York thankfully. So I grabbed an everything bagel and giant ice coffee from The Corner Cafe while I sat in Madison Square Park and debriefed the weekend with my friend Meghan over the ole phone. We had a lot to talk about :)
Madison Square Park.

de-liccccc-ious.

in the olden days ... or just last year... I used to work in that building on the left.

In an effort to squeeze in more fun before getting on an Acela back to Boston, I closed out my Sunday with a 2 hour walk around Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. I did accidentally walk through the projects and stumble into a police chase ... which was just a smidge more exciting than walking on the High Line ... but next time I'll skip the police chase.

oh, don't make that face.

making the street art colorful.

To recover from all that excitement, I spent the next couple of hours soaking in some sun on the Hudson and eating a tasty burger and fries with my friends. When the people watching was too much to handle, we hoped in a cab and I was off to Penn Station.
not pictured: pregnant friend and amazing people watching.

Maybe you understand why all I was able to accomplish on the way home was a few sections of the Sunday New York Times .... a few bazillion Instagrams.... and of course watched a romcom on the ole iPad. So tired. So very tired.

this picture is blurry, but when my eyes are tired it looks crisp and clear. so there.

Since we all love when I bring bizness into my personal life, let's talk key takeaways.
  • If someone suggests you take a last minute trip to NYC, you do it.
  • Never turn down bacon.
  • Ice coffee is better sitting in a park.
  • Sleep is overrated.
Oh, and schedule a buffer day if you plan on having too much fun. Your coworkers don't want to see how cranky you are to be at a desk and not on the High Line Park.

Family + Future

4.22.2011

It's been two weeks since I've been home and man it feels good. My own bed! All of my sweatpants! Ice cubes! Okay... okay...

Despite being in NYC this week, I did manage to see family. My dad and little brother were in town for Boy Scout trip and so I went to meet them for a quick hello while there were at dinner on Tuesday. On my way to tourist central (aka Times Square vicinity), I passed St. Patrick's Cathedral. I've often been by it but never inside and the doors were wide open since the weather was so nice. Despite being crunched on time, I zipped in and took a few minutes for myself.

The cathedral itself is quite busy with tourists but still serene and relaxing oddly enough. I can never resist lighting a candle or two with a prayer. This time I did two candles: one for family and one for the future.

and of course I checked in there on Foursquare. Not that I'm going to Foursquare mayor of a church (don't go enough to make it happen), but feels like an opportunity for a joke about separation of church and state... maybe not. :)

HAPPY FRIDAY!

Giggles = Needed

4.20.2011

In the event you are in need of a giggle this hump day, I stumbled upon this video of a baby penguin... being .... tickled. And yes, it is as cute as you would expect it to be.

Quick update? I had a really great weekend in NYC with my friend Ria and other new friends. Quick teasers? Rain, Rain, Yankees game, Rain ... and then there was sun! Here is one of my favorite pictures from the weekend (there weren't too many)

I actually made this my background at work so I can remember how gorgeous all those blooming spring flowers and trees are :)

Keep it real homeslices.

(Even More) Spring

4.13.2011

Are you tired of my spring posts yet?

I hope not. The office that I'm currently working out of is located on 42nd Street in Manhattan. I would not have expected there to be flowers on the street in the middle of NYC but there are .... and its glorious. I love walking to my favorite coffee shop - Aroma Espresso Bar - and quite literally stopping to smell the flowers.

Daffodils!
Blooming Trees .... now if only the sky was blue too.
Tulips are my favorite :)

My First Trip to Brooklyn

4.06.2011

Last night, I took a great adventure to Brooklyn. I've heard great things about this place and hell, there is a Foursquare badge for this grand mystical place. I was meeting up with two friends at Caracas and looking forward to catching up. Little did I know that there was more than one Caracas location...

So I took an unexpected trip to the East Village... and while I was only there for a few minutes it seemed quite nice. Ooops.
I was making excellent time getting to Brooklyn until I got off at the wrong stop. The train from the East Village to Brooklyn is also pretty crowded. I guess the rumor is true that a lot of people live there and work in Manhattan. Sidenote: I've never been on such a rough subway ride as the minute between 1st Ave and Bedford Ave. Its the only time I've actually needed to hold on to the bars. I wasn't initially and had a slightly awkward moment when I bumped into a gentlemen who seemed to think I was trying to get into his backpack.

But! Once I did get to Caracas... it was really awesome. The pictures I took on my phone were super poor so I borrowed these from the interweb. (Thanks Interweb!) For an appetizer, we split these super tasty Tostones and for dinner I had the La Surena arepa. Oh, and two pitchers of caipirinhas.

Tostones Mochimeros $5.50
Fried Green Plantains topped with Mojito Mayo, a squeeze of lemon and white cheese
Tostones Mochimeros
La Sureña $7.50
grilled chicken and chorizo, with avocado slices and the classic and always enigmatic spicy chimi-churri sauce

In the event you were keeping track, I have checked-in twice in Brooklyn. So I need 23 more to get the "I heart Brooklyn" badge.

So truth serum? I actually got off the subway originally at Bedford Ave and thought I should have gotten off at 1st Ave. So I took the subway back to 1st ave and then realized I should have gotten off at Bedford Ave... so I took that rough L train ride 4 times.

$11 pick me up

4.05.2011

Mondays are always a little bit of a shock. Its like oh hey there, remember all that relaxing fun you had over the weekend? Its gone. Put on some tights and a cardigan and get to work. Oh, and slap on your headset cause you're going to be on hours of conference calls.

To add to this, on Mondays I have to wake up pretty early to take the train from Boston to NYC. I look like crap on the train too. My face is puffy from lack of sleep, I wear leggings and running shoes and a mismatched cardigan. Its a wonder I'm single right? Weird how I haven't met the love of my life on the train....

regardless.

Yesterday, when I left work the weather was just warm enough and the sky looked great. A winner of an evening in Manhattan. So I scooted back to the hotel to do a Batman change into some casual clothes, charged my ipad, and headed out for the evening. I stopped at one of the million nail salons (Trevi Nails) in the Grand Central vicinity. In an effort to force some spring weather on us, I picked a friendly bright pink color and I loved it. Its amazing how a relaxing $11 manicure can totally change my energy.
After a quick manicure, I headed to my favorite wine bar in the Murray Hill area, Wine:30. I always enjoy going to Wine:30 because I have a great time whether I'm alone or with some girlfriends. It was a great night reading my "book" and sipping a glass of wine. For dinner I had the following:
  • glass of Nieto Reserva, Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina
  • Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil, Balsamic, Honey, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
  • Pan Roasted Halibut. Served with Balsamic Drizzle, and Fresh Vegetable Caponata
  • red velvet cupcakes
After a nice relaxing evening, I am switching it up a bit tonight and taking my first trip to Brooklyn. Going to take in some Venezuelan food at Caracas with some friends I haven't connected with in the ginormous apple!

Faux Culture Sunday

3.27.2011

Every couple weeks I like to come into NYC early and check out a new site or have dinner with an old friend. There are upsides and downsides to this for sure. Upside? See friend. See new sites. Downside? Leave home much earlier than normal.

But upsides clearly outweigh the downsides.

This Sunday, I'm going to sit and relax by the ocean... last Sunday, I was adventurous.

I got to NYC mid-afternoon and thankfully the weather was still super nice and I was able to enjoy the rest of the day. I changed out of my travelling clothes (read as sweatpants) and into some jeans (read as jeggings) and set out to paint the town red.

1st stop: Starbucks.
I picked up a tea with honey... and a cake pop. Now that I had some sustenance I was ready to continue to adventure.

2nd stop: Bryant Park.
I wasn't really a big Sex & the City fan so seeing the New York Public Library didn't have that type of a significance to me - but I love libraries and I love big buildings. I also love parks. Win. Win. and Win. The NYPL (yep, I'm shortening it) is gorgeous and impressive. But, part of the allure of libraries is that you feel naughty walking around and disturbing the peace. This place felt a bit more like a museum than a library.
See I even saw "art". I'm so cultured now.

3rd stop: The "30 Rock" Statue and St. Patrick's Cathedral
I was planning on meeting up with a new friend a little more uptown and so I strolled up 5th Avenue. (Oh and I broke out my cakepop for the walk) The weather was still nice enough for all the tourists to be blocking the sidewalk taking pictures - especially of the Rockefeller area.

4th stop: Vero Wine Bar
Whenever I go to a new restaurant I always do a instant assessment of whether I could eat solo there, Vero Wine Bar is perfect for that... but thankfully I had company this time. Based on my Foursquare history (nerdy I know), I sat at the bar here for nearly 3 hours just chatting over a bottle of wine. Not too shabby, rather great.

5th stop: Sip Sak
The person that I met up with is Turkish and suggested a place near by for a bite to eat. I've never had Turkish food but I'm sold on it. The friend that I was with took charge of the ordering in Turkish no less. We shared many small plates and since they were super tasty I figured I'd write them down:

  • Artichoke hearts with fava beans
  • Humus
  • yogurt soup
  • stuffed grape leaves
  • Kibbi (faux meatballs)

I'm not sure Sip Sak is a "solo" dining place but I'd love to go back and enjoy sharing plates again.

6th stop: Hotel Sweet Hotel
Great Sunday in the city.

A little spot of sunshine

3.23.2011

I take my meals really seriously. The day must be brutal for me to miss a meal - never mind breakfast. It's one of my favorite meals of the day whether I just have Greek Yogurt or something more exciting. Is there anything better than sipping coffee to start the day? Obviously its better in a favorite coffee mug but I'll take it anyway I can get it ... except perhaps from McDonalds. I'm sure there is some survey out there saying that people love McDonalds just the same as other brands ... but frankly I don't care.

Well, I recently stumbled upon this place called Aroma near my office.... and .... its .... delicious. I started going there for lunch and was hooked. Their Grilled Chicken Cesear Salad was my gateway drug to the eventual pancake bites. (yes you read that right...) I tend to get the crazy tasty oatmeal for breakfast with a regular coffee. The fresh fruit is super delicious and makes me feel like I'm actual making a good eating decision - so much so that I can do a wine bar for dinner.

I'm not going to wax on about how much I love Aroma but here are few reasons why this brand / establishment has captivated my attention more than Starbucks recently:

  1. The oatmeal comes with delicious fresh fruit. The blueberries are crazy plump and the strawberries obviously aren't too shabby either.
  2. You get a mini chocolate with your coffee.... even at 7:30 in the morning. Win Win. Sometimes I forget that I have them and then I find two at a time. Jackpot.
  3. The coffee cards are punched with a "heart" punch. Hey, its the little things.
One last reason? Social media presence. The last 4 times I tweeted my Foursquare check-in Aroma responded - which I think is impressive considering I've only done it 4 times. Aroma feels I deserve the pancake bites even if it isn't raining.
Its hard to argue with Aroma when the pancake bites are as delicious as they are..... just look at the picture.
These little nuggets are so fluffy and perfectly sweet. I only wish they were priced just a smidge lower and perhaps came with a few more in the to-go container....

It might be raining / snowing  when I leave the hotel this morning in which case, I might have to treat myself to some pancake bites.

Getting my culture on

3.22.2011

OOF - Edward Ruscha
My thoughts exactly.

OOF.

In an effort to get out and experience more culture in NYC, I went to the MOMA one night after work. I am not a museum person at all. I quite literally ran through the Louvre in Paris and waited in the lobby of the National Gallery of Ireland while Baby Sister soaked up all the culture.

But, I'm in NYC and if I can't lead a typical home life, I might as well celebrate the fact that I can go to the MOMA on a Thursday night. Its actually not that easy to go to museums at night because they close at ....5:30 pm. For reals. But once a month, the MOMA stays open late and I happened to time it right so I was able to take advantage. PLUS, I got in for free with my work ID. Boo yah.
See my ticket price? $0. Also, feel free to take note that I took home a brochure intended for children to learn about Abstract Expressionism. I know its for children, but I know nothing. I completely looked past the the sign asking people just like me to not take one.

I'll fully admit that I didn't see the whole museum but I did take in the experience for sure and actually had some fun while I was at it. Here are a few of my favorites:

This painting is 13 feet long. Don't worry, I like it for more than its length.
Water Lilies -- Monet
I don't really know what an olive tree looks like but I guess this is it. Everybody and their brother loves "Starry Night", I'll take this one instead. The description on the website says that this is supposed to be the daytime pair to Starry Night. Oh, and he painted it while he was in the crazy house.
Olive Trees -- van Gogh
I love a good beard - although, this might be a bit much for me.
Portrait of Joseph Roulin - van Gogh
Frankly, this is where I get confused about art. Like, I could have made this in Microsoft Powerpoint. I know it would not be as exciting but come on now. Baby Sister will kill me for saying something like this :)

The museum was doing this really cool Andy Warhol exhibit while I was visiting. You could get your picture/video/I have no idea really taken in his style. Downside? They were going to put it on the interweb. I know I'm on the web obviously (hello, you are reading my blog) but I'm not one to just give people my picture and let them do what they want with it. I'm not a pre-teen celebrity.

Interestingly enough, there was also an exhibit about FONTS. Thankfully, no Comic Sans. I really hate that one.
Fonts!
All in all, a great cultural excursion that I can cross of my "to do" list.
