Thanks for the reminder Delta

3.11.2011

Back in the fall I got an interesting Delta promotion on flights from Detroit to South America (or something like that). Being a lover of data, I wondered where Delta got off thinking I would ever went to Detroit. Didn't they have customer metrics on me to indicate that I lived in Boston? They should be able to know that I'm a diehard New Englander. Detriot be damned! (Just kidding, I'm sure its a lovely place. Eminem made a stellar car commercial all about it.)

So this week, I got this email from Delta advertising "Love" promotions. Now Delta, I'm not expecting you to know that I'm single although you could probably check your records (or those records that you buy about your customers) and see that I've only ever bought one ticket anywhere.... which I guess could mean a lot of things. I'm a business traveler. I'm a secret agent. I'm selfish. Etc Etc Etc.

The promotion is exclusively for "wedding" or "honeymoon" packages. Want to know what I think would be fun? Just buy a wedding/honeymoon package and go away with a single girlfriend. Let them spoil us and shower us with flowers and romantic massages. This is something that is right up Baby Sister's alley... too bad we just got back from our own little honeymoon in Boca.

But thanks for the reminder Delta that I'm totally single and there isn't a snowball's chance in hell I'll be buying a vacation package from you anytime soon.

Happy Times. Happy Tummy.

Sometimes after a long week all I really want is just to sit on the couch and decompress. I don't think that is too much to ask for. But last week, there was cause to celebrate! A great family friend took Baby Sister and I out to dinner in town ... and by town I mean "hometown" not "downtown". Stella is one of my favorite restaurants in Boston and one of the talented guys that worked there opened his own restaurant, Oro, in my town.

Baby Sister and I got dolled up for the occasion ... and by that I mean we looked good if I say so myself. The Scituate Harbor restaurant has a really cute atmosphere - both for the dining area and bar area. It is nice to see some established chefs take risks and put themselves in the suburbs. My stomach certainly appreciated the efforts.

The menu fits me to a T and I could have gobbled up pretty much anything on there... but as you can see below I made some pretty good decisions.

Fried artichoke hearts, country mustard remoulade, basil oil
... oh and that's a tasty cesear salad in the background
Proscuitto Wrapped Local Cod, herbed spaghetti squash, shaved shallot meuniere
Assorted Gelato
I'm not normally a dessert person but I definitely got onboard with this decision... wish I could remember the flavors to share :)

.... and she can work!

My baby sister is returning to the workforce today. This is a big day since it means she will learn about some really important things like:
  • 401k
  • health insurance
  • expense reimbursements
  • fiscal quarters
  • taxes
Baby girl does have a solid head on her shoulders - so don't get me wrong. She's smart for realsies. When I thought about this day coming, I had flashbacks to a few Friends episodes featuring the one and only Phoebe. I, for one I can't think about my own 401k without this particular Phoebe moment.

On the other end of the spectrum, I'm pretty sure Baby Sister will never turn into this version of Phoebe... but if she did I'd love to buy a ticket to watch from the sidelines. I'll never forget how impressive Baby Sister looked in her first suit. Goose bumps :)
The quality of that clip is pretty poor. Here is the link to the original.

ANYWAY. As a mobile employee, I don't get to have a desk and all the accouterments that come with that luxury.... but Baby Sister is going to have one of her very own so I figured I'd give her some suggestions of things I think she should have.

PRETTY FLOWERS. This family has a hard time keeping things alive... but perhaps a flower pot that reminds you to care for it would be helpful.

FISHY FISHY. Zen Gardens are so last year. What she really needs is this fish tank / lamp / cellphone / scissor holder. But, am I the only one that would be worried about the lamp slowly cooking the fish?

WHACK-A-MOLE. Everyone needs a frustration buster... but I'm pretty sure this would be more fun if it dispensed tickets you could trade in for tacky arcade games.
DRUM SET. You won't be making any friends with this sucker.... or will you?  I'm pretty sure this is an awesome idea.
CAFFEINE. I'm not sure I'd ever recommend drinking a lime green drink in general... never mind at work but with this gizmo you can keep your coffee warm in the winter and cold in the summer. Seems too good to be true. You let me know how this works. I'm pretty sure TSA wouldn't like it going through security.

.... and perhaps you can become popular if you have one of these on your desk for Friday. Margaritas for you and your four closest office friends. I'm pretty sure if you had this on your desk you wouldn't have trouble making four new work friends.

So.... GOOD LUCK BABY SISTER!

Note: blog post inspired by this Mashable article... oh and this one too.

Silly Things

3.06.2011

I would never claim to have a "normal" sense of humor. I am not sure why but I have always enjoyed older sitcoms a little bit more. Stick me in front of an "I Love Lucy" marathon and I'm a happy girl.

Tiger Blood Bandwagon

3.05.2011

Charlie Sheen is pretty much certifiably banana pancakes crazy. No secrets there.

So, I guess its no real secret that when you are off your rocker and in a manic state (Dr. Drew said so, so it must be right) anything you say could and might become a trending hashtag on Twitter.

During one of his many interviews recently, Charlie threw out a few of these great quotes:
"I am on a drug. It's called Charlie Sheen. It's not available, because if you try it once, you will die and your children will weep over your exploded body. Too much?"

"I'm tired of pretending like I'm not special. I'm tired of pretending like I'm not a total bitchin' rock star from Mars."

“I’m different. I have a different constitution, I have a different brain, I have a different heart. I got tiger blood, man.”

"I have one speed. I have one gear: Go."

"I'm an F-18 bro."

"I'm a high priest Vatican assassin warlock"

Don't believe me? Watch the video.

So, I guess its no surprise that people have jumped on board with milking the Tiger Blood hashtag. After all, he did break a World Record by gaining one million plus followers on Twitter the fastest ever. Even the Red Cross is on the bandwagon with this tweet:
Spirit Air also sent me this email offer the other day with some great fares under the "Living the Dream" Sale. I'm not sure who is in charge of marketing at Spirit Air but I'm pretty sure milking Charlie Sheen for revenue is something you can't get away with at a real airline.
But nice job getting in all the Sheen references you can Spirit Air. Two Goddesses, Tiger Blood, Adonis DNA, Living the Dream, Bring It, and.... WINNING.

Vacation is over? Lame.

One of the best parts about vacation is being on it - obvious I know. This is actually the view from our hotel room at the Boca Raton Resort. It is excellent for manatee watching - which I did every morning from the desk.

One of the worst parts of vacation is transitioning back into society.

Boca was such a great 5 days that it seems pretty obvious the rest of the week would have been a bit downhill. If I ever gain the courage, I'll write a blog post about the return flight on Spirit Air. Needless to say, it was atrocious, unprofessional, and broke me down to a level I thought couldn't exist.

But... the last few days of our vacation went swimmingly. We hit the spa. Played in the pool. Soaked up some rays. Drank some Gin & Tonics. All in all a giant win. Baby sister actually wrote a very comical blog post on the spa experience that I encourage you to read. I'm biased for sure but I laughed so hard that I cried... and I read it in a hotel lobby.
One thing that Baby Sister didn't mention is that we spent the day at the spa for approximately $20 each. When we took a tour of the joint, the woman happened to let it slip that if you booked a service you could use the facilities for the whole day. So what did the Foley girls do? We spent the entire day there and booked a service for the end of the day. The Ritual Spa Bath runs $35 each - but with my Hilton Honors Diamond Status (baller status) we got it for 50% off. Also, yes that is my big toe in the middle of the picture. I've heard that when the 2nd toe is bigger than the others it's a sign of royalty. Since I was totally living the life at the Spa Palazzo, I like to think that is the truth.

Just so the documentation of our celebrity experience is complete, I need to inform the world that we also saw Donny Deutsch. So that would bring our grand total to FOUR. Quite impressive.
We saw Donny as we were lingering by the pool on our last day. He strolled by with a Suzanne Sommers wanna-be in a crazy tight dress and runway high heels. Since telling people that I saw Donny, I feel like only 30% of people know who he is ... and they all know him from different things. Me? I feel like I first heard about him from The Apprentice with Donald Trump which was like way back in 2005. I also remembered him from his show "Big Idea with Donny Deutsch". To show how much I watched, I was completely unaware it went off the air in 2008. Oops.

Anyway, vacation is over and I'm back in the real world. Looking forward to my next adventure.... whenever that is.

An odd bunch

2.27.2011

Since I've been working in NYC, I would get really excited if I saw a celebrity. I would even blog about it if I could identify the actual name of the person. I didn't really have much in the way of expectations for this weekend getaway for celebrities. My expectations were to soak up some sun, get some sleep, and take some pictures. I can successfully say that we've done that... and more.

Along the way, we've run into a handful of celebrities that could not be more different from each other. It almost sounds like a joke to list of their "professions" together. A fame-whoring father, a comedian, and a (iron) chef.

The Fame-whoring Father. Spotted Michael Lohan at the pool on Friday morning with some tramp-like blonde girl. I was standing at the pool's edge talking to baby sister in the chair when I kind of locked eyes with this gentleman who was wearing far too many articles of clothing for a hot pool day. I told her that I was 98% sure it was Michael Lohan. Not being able to make the connection or recognize him, she decided to say loudly "Lohan" to test it out. Needless to say, she trusts me now. (Side note, I did some googling... and it turns out that he was in town to speak at a center for troubled teens. WTF).

A few samples of his crazy influence? His son wants to change his name. Has a crazy ex-fiancée who was was a tabloid reporter.

The Comedian. We heard from the Gift Shop lady that Jay Leno would be in town for this antique car show that the resort was having this weekend. I'm not sure we expected to see him being as this is like a gazillion acre resort and I'm pretty sure I'd lose Baby Sister if we didn't have cellphones. BUT, this morning while hanging in the Palm Court I smiled at Jay Leno ... and he smiled at me.... or maybe we both smiled at the same time?
Mr. Leno is the guy in the Navy jacket with grey hair over my shoulder. Prettttty exciting.

The Chef. Last night we went to dinner at Marimoto, a sushi restaurant on the property. The restaurant is run by the Iron Chef Marimoto - baby sister's favorite Iron Chef. She was pumped enough to eat there ... and tonight she got to see him in person. Although this picture shows how close she got, it was still a victory.

Tomorrow is our last day at the Wally and I guess anything is possible based on what we've seen so far... but I'm half hoping for a quiet last day by the pool :)

Happy 200th Blog Post to Me!

2.25.2011

This is my 200th blog post. I found it oddly worrisome about what I would write about (or not) - like there was someone out there who would find fault in my celebration. This is oddly hilarious because thanks to Google Analytics I know approximately how many people read my blog... and how many open it and close it really quickly. All of this "pressure" got to me enough that I didn't even post on my "blogaversary" which was yesterday ... I'm being a tad bit dramatic, I know.

But, I do feel its rather interesting to look back on the year since I started to blog. I was a very different person one year ago today. I don't really share personal feelings on this site. If you read this you know that I'm more apt to tell you about my latest Amazon purchase and how I'm maximizing my Hilton Rewards. But, as a point of reflection a year ago I was a different person. There were highs and lows of course - many more highs than lows. The highs being my incredible friends, getting my MBA, and making some really great memories. The lows aren't important to discuss. If you know me, you know the lows.

Now? I've been working for corporate America for 6 months and living the dream. That is, if living the dream is making Powerpoints and collecting Hilton points.... not really the dream right? Still, I can't complain too much. But thanks to all those Hilton Points, I'm taking in some sun with Baby Sister in Boca Raton at the Waldorf Astoria. I like to call it "The Wally". The Wally is pretty great because pretty much nobody tells you "no".

We are hanging here until Monday late afternoon at which point we'll return to reality aboard our Spirit Air flights - which I'm sure baby sister will blog about... cause it is .... special. Until then, this is what I'll be looking at all day.... Enjoy.
